This week’s television – it’s Pope night on ITV2

Coming on Thursday on ITV2 it’s Pope night as ITV2 devotes an evening of programmes to the papal visit.

7 pm – An Audience with the Pope – the traditional ITV “audience with…” format is brought to Bellahouston Park as Pope Benedict XVI takes questions from an audience of celebrities including First Minister Alex Salmond for First Minister, former King of the Jungle Christopher Biggins, TV funnyman Michael McIntyre, and Marina from TV’s Last of the Summer Wine. The show reaches a climax as the Pope performs a barbershop quartet routine with Jethro, voice of Zippy Roy Skelton, and Alan Carr.

8 pm – Cheggers Plays Pope -the former Mr Maggie Philbin challenges Pope Benedict XVI to various board games including Backgammon, Risk, and no holds barred Buckaroo. featuring a voiceover by Holly Willoughby

9 pm – Fearne meets Ben – Hard-hitting investigative reporter Fearne Cotton spends a week in the company of the Pope and gets to know the real man inside the robes. The show contains exclusive footage of the Pope shopping for new shoes and new papal socks. The highlight is where Fearne, in the midst of another funny story about Reggie Yates, fails to notice that the Pope has a big religious secret he wants to share.

10 pm – Pope on a Rope – from the team behind the trial of Gary Glitter a drama documentary looking at a fictitious trial of the Pope following Professor Richard Dawkins and Geoffrey Robertson QC’s fictitious citizen’s arrest in relation to the child abuse cover-up by the Roman Catholic hierarchy. Robertson appears as himself for the prosecution. With contributions from Miranda Sawyer, Paul O’Grady, and Colleen Nolan.
