The curse of comedy series 2

To me… To you…

The Chuckle Brothers, behind the smiles, a bittersweet dark drama from the team behind Hancock and Joan, The Curse of Steptoe, and that one about Hughie Greene.  Reuniting Robson Greene and Jerome Flynn playing the Chuckle Brothers, David Morrissey as scriptwriter Russell “Television” Davies, and John Simm in a cameo as Bobby Ball, “To me… To you…” unfortunately misfired.  The chemistry between the leads who played the parts with a sense of super-realism was undermined by the Simm cameo.  Fully embracing the verbal and physical tics of Bobby Ball, Simm’s performance seemed to come from a different drama.  The spectacular mental disintegration of Ball after viewing an early CHuckle Brothers episode, was reminiscent of Bill Treacher’s spectacular performance as Arthur Fowler following the incident with the Christmas Club money.  Not repeated, following legal action by Barry Chuckle after the initial BBC4 broadcast.

About loveandgarbage

I watch the telly and read when not doing law stuff and plugging my decade and a half old unwatched Edinburgh fringe show.
