It’s an ill wind that blows for Gail

As sources close to Tommy Sheridan’s family anticipate that Gail Sheridan and her father will be arrested and charged with perjury Solidarity has issued a statement on yesterday’s news abou the three arrests of Solidarity members.  They state

“Solidarity today condemned as scandalous and unprecedented the widening vendetta being pursued by Lothian and Borders Police and the Scottish Crown office against our party and Tommy Sheridan.  We can today confirm that Solidarity members Jock Penman,  our national secretary Graeme McIver and our co-convener Rosemary Byrne have all now been charged with perjury by Lothian and Borders police. We expect that other Solidarity members will also be charged in the coming days. Their “crime” in the eyes of the Murdoch empire, the police and sections of the Scottish legal establishement has been to stand shoulder-to shoulder with Tommy Sheridan throughout his defamation case and since. It is for these actions that they have now been singled out and subjected to sustained police pressure and intimidation and have now been charged. Solidarity declares our 100% support for our members who are now facing perjury charges.  Our members have done nothing wrong, committed no crime and consistently told the truth. They are guilty of nothing other than standing up against the reactionary bile of the News of the World and the Murdoch press.

“Once again, we repeat our calls for an investigation into the reasons for this unprecedented investigation and the massive resources given to it – now exceeding £500,000 of public money has been squandered. Never before in Scottish legal history has a perjury inquiry followed a civil case. The Scottish Crown Office and Lothian and Borders Police should not be acting as agents for Rupert Murdoch’s witch-hunt.”

On which see previous posts under the Tommy Sheridan tag (below) as to the reason the inquiry started in the first place, that this isn’t a Murdoch based witch-hunt but an investigation initiated by the judge where the evidence could have led the other way (as either those that remained in the SSP or those that joined Solidarity were lying given the stark contradiction in evidence between the two groups), that Tommy is the author of his own misfortune as a result of his decision to sue, in the first place (despite the advice from his then fellow SSP members), that people are charged with perjury for standing “Shoulder to shoulder” with Sheridan because the police have evidence that they have lied – either based on written or oral evidence (or having traced mobile phone records (and accordingly where calls came from), work sheets, evidence from those that worked in the various clubs, &c).  But, charges do not necessarily mean prosecution – because the Procurator Fiscal (prosecutor) has to decide whether prosecution is warranted based on the police report.  Further, there may yet be charges against News of the World witnesses (given what was said within the witness box).

Perhaps the relevant parties should concentrate on defending the charges (which they all deny) and challenging the evidence rather than suggesting it is all part of a conspiracy theory against the Govan Bigfoot.

Anyway, investigations continue.
