Diary of a madman

Unheralded, BBC7 will this weekend broadcast one of the great audio performances.  At 5.20 pm on Saturday Gogol’s Diary of a Madman starring Kenneth Williams will be repeated.  The recording – made for an animated film that came to naught – has been broadcast on BBC7 a couple of times.  Recorded in the early 60s it was first broadcast in 1991 on Radio 4, and is a haunting performance.  There are some that associate Williams so heavily with Carry On films that they fail to realise his appreciable skills.

About loveandgarbage

I watch the telly and read when not doing law stuff and plugging my decade and a half old unwatched Edinburgh fringe show.

    – ta very much for pointing this out – i don’t usually read the radio listings v.carefully, so i might well have missed it…

    • No problem. I nearly missed it in the Radio Times as it’s got very little publicity, but having heard it in 1991 and remembering chunks vividly – well worth a listen (albeit that it’s quite a tortured tale).
