Quiz answers

Given the plethora of interest in the quiz posted the other day here are the quotes with answers

1.  Who said of Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band  “I can only say that The Beatles having made their name in the narrow emotional and harmonic world of teenage pop, are now floating away on their own cloud.  I doubt whether their own fancies and imagination are strong enough to command an audience instead of collaborating with it.”?   Philip Larkin in his jazz reviews – which ordinarily attacked Coltrane or Davis but also found time to have a go at the Beatles occasionally.

2.  Of whom did Beryl Reid say,  “I felt much richer by working with her.  A lovely lovely lady.  Dead sexy.  She used to knit balaclavas for Harry Secombe.”?   Beryl Reid was talking about the estimable Hattie Jacques.

3.  Who said, “I am a very bad radio actor” and “I guess you might call me a character actor and it’s taken me a lot of hard work to get that character.”?   The great Sid James so described himself.

4.  Who is Dennis Potter describing?  “He’s like that bit in TS Eliot – he does a piece in all these different voices, a complicated perpetual parody.  It’s funny, but it’s not real, and you’re always aware of that.”   Potter was discussing Martin Amis (the quote being slightly more favourable than Tibor Fischer’s review of Yellow Dog).

5.  Who described Melvyn Bragg as “one of our better second-class novelists”?  Sir Alec Guinness so described Melvyn Bragg.  This multi-purpose insult can be adapted to most work environments.

6.  And who advised his mother “Get your legs around a good man.  That’ll put you right.”?   Tony Hancock is reported to have said this in 1959.
