The Nats pronounce and Sedley, LJ wants to know all about you

Mark today in the diary for annual celebration.  The SNP finally do something – their legislative programme is announced today – only 4 months after the election.

Lord Justice Sedley believes that we should all be on the DNA database.  (And I’d always pegged him as one of the liberal judges).  Apparently, this is because of the 4 million currently on the database there are innocent people, and to be fair to all innocent people (and to prevent crime) we should all be on the database.  Make of that what you will, but has Sir Stephen been too influenced by Minority Report and its ilk?  Note that, already the database is the largest in the world.  Any database would be controlled by the state with a state operated IT system – of the sort discussed in today’s Guardian (which was subject to systematic hacking from a foreign power according to Richard Norton Taylor’s report).

When the work of Field Major Dr Styre, Supervoc, Jack Straw, and the like uses outriders from the judiciary we should start getting worried.

About loveandgarbage

I watch the telly and read when not doing law stuff and plugging my decade and a half old unwatched Edinburgh fringe show.

Field Major Dr Styre, Supervoc, Jack Straw
And which one of that gang put the words in Sedley LJ’s mouth? My money’s on McNulty.

Come to think of it, didn’t the old International Marxist Group (Tony Cliff’s forerunner to the SWP) use the services of a barrister called Stephen Sedley back in the 1970s?

Eh? I hadn’t realised Tony had had involvement with the IMG. Anathema, I would’ve though, them being orthodox 4i Trotskists, rather than Leninists.
I never could get my head round all the interrelationships in the Marxian Left.

    • Sedley acted for varioous leftist organisations, and it is rumoured was denied promotion to the bench (and subsequently to the Court of Appeal) as promptly as he should as a result of his political views. I’ve read a few of his published pieces on judicial review and civil liberties and find the interview this morning difficult to reconcile with them.
Apologies for the delay in replying – I’ve been touring Fife giving lectures and only just got PC access.

They’re going about it the wrong way. They should do it as gene meme on Fizzoggbook and the job would be done by the end of the week.
