So why has Mike Russell stopped his blog only three days after the Beeb featured his blog in an anodyne article on the BBC news website. His blog homepage simply indicates it is now open by invitation only. Russell’s homepage is more revealing. In block capital letters (and green print) it states,
“AM SORRY THAT I HAVE HAD TO WITHDRAW ACCESS TO MY BLOG, AND ITS ARCHIVE. THE REASON IS RECENT ABUSE OF MY PRESENT AND PAST POSTINGS – WHICH HAVE OF COURSE BEEN FREELY AVAILABLE SINCE I STARTED THIS SITE IN APRIL 2006. I SHALL NOT NOW BE ADDING ANY NEW POSTINGS .
“IT IS OF COURSE REGRETTABLE THAT THE NEW MEDIA AND THE DEMOCRATISATION OF CONTENT IS BEING UNDERMINED IN THIS WAY. BUT I AM DETERMINED THAT NOTHING SHOULD DETRACT FROM THE GREAT WORK BEING DONE IN SCOTLAND TODAY BY ALEX SALMOND AND THE NEW SCOTTISH GOVERNMENT. IF ANY BLOG IS BEING MALICIOUSLY MISREPRESENTED IN ORDER TO ATTACK THAT, THEN GIVING UP WRITING IT , OR READING IT , IS A SMALL MATTER !”
What could this mean? A technorati search against Russell’s blog reveals little, other than a series of recent links about broadcasting and my own links. A google blog search is similarly uninformative with only my previous posting showing A search of the net from google blog search reveals a series of links from tartan hero and a nicely cached set of Russell’s postings – no longer available to the public. The full content of Russell’s postings has been removed from the internet archive machine although those that have subscribed to the xml feed from Russell’s blog will have the entire record cached.
So, why has he stopped? What is in these posts that has been abused and maliciously misrepresented. Any thoughts?
