Things you don’t expect to hear on the news: number 1

People who sound Geordie claiming they sound Jamaican.

I listened to Radio 5 Live this morning and joined midway through an interview with what seemed to be a woman from the north east of England.   I thought her Geordie accent was marked but she seemed very upset saying that she hated the way she sounded.  I thought the feature was the usual nonsense about trusted accents and was only half-listening until I thought I heard her claim that she was speaking with a Jamaican accent.

At this I was bemused and after some digging on the BBC website found that she has been interviewed on lots of programmes today (including elsewhere on the BBC). Foreign accent syndrome is a recognised medical condition.

About loveandgarbage

I watch the telly and read when not doing law stuff and plugging my decade and a half old unwatched Edinburgh fringe show.
