Every now and again a DVD comes along that makes you glad to be alive – that renders criticism superfluous. Something unique and precious.
Yes, folks – Indoor League Volume One is on DVD. Brought to our screens by renaissance man Sid Waddell, the genius behind Jossy’s Giants and darts commentary since the days of Alan Evans and LEighton Rees, INdoor League represents the apex of sporting television coverage – years before Sky had been invented.
Thrill to proper darts (on a proper Yorkshire dartboard), to shove ha’penny, to bar skittles, to arm wrestling, to bar billiards. All presented by your avuncular host (and poor skittler) Fred Trueman. Exempt from BBFC certification – although featuring scenes of our Fred pipe clenched in teeth a la David Bryant – it’s only £9.99 £7.99. For two and a half hours of peak time Yorkshire TV entertainment.
And for those of you who don’t know what it’s all about try the collection of clips gathered together here.
PS And while you’re browsing there’s a petition calling for the release of Sid’s masterpiece Jossy’s Giants on DVD. And for the opening titles (“football’s just a branch of science” try here and scroll down or simply click here for the song in glorious MP3-an-audio).
Fantastic.
Ah’ll sithee.
