I have long admired the top darts commentator Sid Waddell. This developed with the heyday of the BDO world darts championship (the late lamented Embassy) on the BBC and was only bolstered by the discover that he wrote Jossy’s Giants about a Newcastle United player managing a children’s football team and included many Waddellisms (“too many prima donnas, not enough Maradonas” being a stand out)
Others share the admiration. This website gathers some of Sid’s best quotes (although not always accurately). Sid himself has a self-aggrandising website and gives examples of his top quotes in the modestly titled Classic Sid Commentary. Sid, an erduite man, brought classic allusion to the world of darts.
My favourite remains
“When Alexander of Macedonia was 33 he cried salt tears because there were no more worlds to conquer - Bristow is only 27!”
Now, though to my great delight, I discover that Sid has his own range of merchandise including his We couldn’t have more excitement if Elvis walked in and asked for a chip sandwich T-shirt and the He has more checkouts than Tescos T-shirt. Hooray.
> “Steve Beaton, he’s not Adonis, he’s THE donis”
And that has to be the greatest ever.
Especially when you see a picture of the bronzed adonis
